This has just started happening to me+my friend's computer, when we start trials we get that message (or something like it) and then it starts. It's not a major problem but it's annoying. I've also been having other problems - screen going white, text disappearing, freezing. I meet the minimum system requirements (I have 2gb ram, XP, 3.06ghz CPU and geforce 8 graphics card). Any way of fixing the problems? Will I need a clean re-install? Thanks in advance EDIT: Look further down the page if you have the mss32.dll problem.
Would this happen to be this chappy here o.O an interesting note is that i recieved this: a few days ago,, shortly after I started getting the mss32.dll error,,, also I know this is not related to trials but since then I`m now unable to play halflife 2 (steam again) in 64-bit extended mode as the games npc ai is disabled. Just adding my 2 cents. Edit*** I have also sent a support ticket to valve escalating the problem it reads 'Hey guys,, a few days ago I received an error when attempting to start game 'trials 2:second edition' that there was a steam error and it was 'unable to contact key server'. A restart of steam fixed this problem and I was able to start trials,, now on starting trials I get a popup windows error box that a dll file mss32_s.dll is missing,, the game still starts if you press ok but obviously somthing is not right there,, further to this since this error occured the 64-bit extended edition of halflife 2 which I have been playing for ages now refuses to work as you get the error 'ai is disabled',,, i have to run hl2 in 32-bit mode obviously to play the game correctly. I know that redlynx have/or are contacting you regarding this matter but I`m just relaying what information I have noticed in the process of this problem also. I would be greatful if you could contact me back on this matter for a fix/solution, or any other helpful information, I would also happily try suggestions to see if they work. Thanks, Douglas Mcarthur' I have also enclosed the 2 pictures above to let them see the errors,, hopefully they`ll get back to me and I`ll post here what they come up with.
Hey again guyz,,, no word back from valve as of yet but I have managed to fix the mss32_s.dll problem by myself,, anyway to cut a long story short I`m assuming that in the recent steam client update this file has actually been removed either deliberatly or by accident, possibly deliberatly as I have came across certain links to steam account stealing programs, some of which refer to this file,, but are in-operable unless obviously the client stealer is part of what you put into the right directory. So dont worry about the client stealer thing it doesnt apply here,,, I initially thought this was a windows system error but after thoroughly checking with registry fixers etc this was not the case. So without further waffling on heres how you get rid of the error,, and yes any idiot can do this. 1: download the missing mss32.dll file from: 2 lace the dll file into your main steam directory: C: Program Files (x86) Steam = xp64 C: Program Files Steam = xp 3: play trials again without the crappy error ************************************************** ********* a further note to this as it hasnt fixed my hl2 ai disabled problem and as before I will post as soon as I get somthing back from Valve. Its entirely up to yourself, both the way I done it and the way valve have said to do it fix the error,, your choice Strange thing they still haven't replied to our questions about this same issue. We can't include this DLL to the game, as it's a part of the Steam, and not possible by the license agreement (it's a Miles Sound System DLL that we have no license for). And this is not the proper way to fix the issue, as the Steam client most likely always uses the most recent Miles Sound System version, and Trials would crash after they upgraded the client in the future.

Sorry but this reads like a dig at me saying you dont think I got a reply from Valve, in respect either way I have described what to do does actually remove the error and I have encountered no problems with doing so, I severly doubt valve would recommend doing this if they hadnt already looked into it, for your proof here is a picture of the reply!
